Cardano Foundation has joined Switzerland's CMTA after the group recognised Cardano's CIP-0113 token standard as equivalent to CMTAT for tokenized shares. Veridian is the first issuer.

The Cardano Foundation has joined the Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA), a Geneva-based body that sets standards for tokenized securities. @Cardano_CF announced the membership on October 29, after @cmta_ch recognised Cardano's new CIP-0113 token standard as technically equivalent to CMTAT, the association's own template for issuing securities as tokens.

In practical terms, Swiss companies can issue shares on @Cardano ($ADA) that qualify for CMTA certification without extra custom work on the token itself. CIP-0113 went live on Cardano mainnet on October 7.

What the CMTA Recognition Covers

According to crypto.news, the recognition covers equity securities but excludes tokenized debt and Cardano's underlying blockchain infrastructure. The same report notes that individual issuers must still meet Swiss legal and certification requirements before they receive CMTA certification.

Coverage of the CMTA Expert Committee's decision also points to issuer conditions. KuCoin News reported that the committee approved the implementation only under several requirements, including that tokenization terms be recorded on-chain. It added that neither Veridian nor the Cardano Foundation had confirmed CMTA certification for the Veridian issuance.

CMTA is a non-profit industry body that develops standards for the use of distributed ledger technology in financial markets, according to CoinTurk. Startup Fortune, citing crypto.news, reported that membership places the foundation alongside law firms, banks and auditors that write the rules Swiss-regulated tokenization must follow, including Lenz & Staehelin, Sygnum Bank and Julius Baer.

How CIP-0113 and Veridian Fit In

CIP-0113 is a programmable token standard. FinanceFeeds reported that it lets issuers enforce KYC checks, transfer restrictions, freezing and seizure directly through token transactions. Unlike conventional Cardano native tokens, programmable tokens require script validation when ownership changes.

Veridian, a digital identity company spun out of the Cardano Foundation, is the first to use the standard for its own equity. CoinDesk reported that most of Veridian's 1 million shares were tokenized on Cardano, and that the tokenized shares are not being offered to the public. The company plans to seek strategic investors in 2027, the foundation said.

Cardano Foundation has said it plans to keep working with projects and institutions using the standard, including on a securities module for regulated financial assets, according to CoinTurk.
